How to Clean Your Hot Tub Filter

Clean water in a Sundance Spas hot tub.

It’s easy to enjoy the benefits of your hot tub when the water is clean and refreshing. Without proper filter maintenance and care, it can be quite difficult to keep the water both safe and clean. In this article, we’re going to review everything you need to know about caring for and maintaining your hot tub filter, so you can continue to enjoy the beauty and joys of your spa for many years to come.

How Often to Clean Your Spa Filter?

The water in your hot tub travels through the filter continuously. The filter catches debris as the water rushes through, sealing and storing it for you to remove and clean out later. After a few days of this, you can imagine that the filter might start to fill up and need to be cleaned, but how often should you clean it exactly?

Weekly

Rinse your filter with water from the hose or sink. If you wish, use a filter cleaning product for a deeper cleaning.

Monthly

Rinse your hot tub filter with water from the hose or sink. Fill a bucket with hot tub filter cleaner and dilute with water. Follow instructions given by the filter cleaner for appropriate amounts. Soak your filter for several hours or overnight, per the directions for the cleaner. Remove and rinse again with water from the hose or sink.

Yearly

Replace your filter with a new one completely. You may need to do this before the year is up if your hot tub endures frequent or heavier usage than normal, the water isn’t regularly cleaned or treated, the filter isn’t regularly cleaned, or the filter has visible damage such as a crack.

Cleaning Your Filter

Cleaning your hot tub filter is much easier than you might think. First, you will want to gather a few supplies from your local hot tub store, such as SunSpa in Calgary:

  • Filter cleaning agent
  • Filter flosser
  • Spare filter
  • Large bucket

During your weekly cleaning, you will only need a hose, filter flosser and filter cleaner. Use your hose, or hose with filter flosser attachment, and spray the filter down. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies of your filter to make sure that all of the debris is removed. If your filter could benefit from a little extra cleaning, use some of your cleaning product and then wash it away.

Once a month you will need to perform a deep cleaning. Start by filling your bucket with filter cleaner and dilute with water, according to the instructions from the cleaner. Power down your hot tub and remove the filter, then place your spare filter in its place and turn the spa back on. This will allow for your hot tub to continue operating while your filter is being cleaned. Place the filter inside the bucket and allow it to soak for as long as the manufacturer recommends, which usually ranges from a few hours to overnight. Once it is done soaking, pour the water down the drain and rinse your filter once again. Repeat the process to switch the filters and then store your spare filter safely once it is dry.
